Music

  1. monophonic texture
    • ‘one voice’; one melody performed either in solo or unison with all participants performing the same melody
    • Ex: Zuni-Lullaby
  2. homophonic texture
    • ‘same voice’: melody with chord accompaniment
    • Ex: Calypso-Freedom
  3. polyphonic texture
    • ‘multiple voices’: two or more melodies, of relatively equal importance, played at the same time
    • Ex: G.F.Handel-Hallelujah Chorus & Messiah (both pieces display mono, homo, and polyphonic)
  4. heterophonic texture
‘different voices’:a texture in which both or all parts play basically the same melody but in slightly different versions. Weaving of melodic strands around a central core of a melody; melody based, rather than harmony, and its strands, happening simultaneously all relate to the central melody in some way through variations, ornamentations, or punctuation of important notes.
  5. Interlocking parts
texture of one musical part subdivided among several musicians; in a polyrhythmic texture, coordination among multiple musical parts.
  6. Polyrhythm
musical texture of multiple rhythmic patterns performed simultaneously
