DEXAMETHASONE

Corticosteroid
- SIDE EFFECTS:
- Depression, flushing, sweating, hypertension, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal distention, increased appetite
- NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
- Treatment of inflammation, allergies, neoplasms, cerebral edema, septic shock, collagen disorders
- PO: take with food, milk, antacids
- IV: Use sodium phosphate form not acetrate phosphate not acetate (injection suspension)
- IM: Shake suspension well give deep int gluteal URQ
- avoid deltoid.route sites
- Excessive consumption of licorice can increase risk of hypokalemia
- Eat food high in protein, calcium, vitamin d, avoid sodium
- Contact clinician if anorexia, difficulty if difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness
- Contact clinician if black tarry stools, slow wound healing, blurred vision, bruising, bleeding, weight gain, emotional changes

- NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
- Treatment of sever inflammation, septic shock, adrenal insufficiency, ulcerative colitis, collagen disorders
- Med masks signs of infection so check for elevated temperature, WBC count
- PO: take with food, milk, antacids
- IM: Give deep into gluteal UDQ, avoid deltoid route sites avoid subQ administration since it may damage tissue
- Rectal: for colitis retain med for 20 minutes onset 3-5 fays

- SIDE EFFECTS:
- peptic ulcer possible preforation, hypertension and circulatory problems, poor wound healing depression, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal distention
- NURSING CONSIDERATION:
- Treatment of severe inflammation, imunosupression, neoplasms, shock, adrenal insufficiency, management of acute spinal cord injury, collagen disorders
- PO: Take with food, milk, antacids
- PO: duration 18-36 hours
- IM: give deep into gluteal UOQ avoid deltoid, route sites, avoid subQ administration since it may damage tissue
- IM: duration 1-4 weeks
- Eat food high in protein, calcium, vitamin D, avoid sodium
- Contact clinician if anorexia, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness, symptoms may appear during periods of stress or trauma
- Contact clinician if black tarry stools, slow wound healing, blurred vision, bruising, weight gain, emotional changes

- NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
- Used to manage symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Take with food or milk
- contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to other NSAIDs
- Alcohol may increase ulcerogenic effects if used concurrently, may take 2 weeks or more to notice improvement

- PO: peak 1-2 hours duration 1- 1/2 days
- Eat food high in protein, calcium, vitamin D, avoid sodium
- Contact clinician if anorexia, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness, symptoms may appear durring periods of stress or trauma.
