What is the difference between an atom and an ion?
an ion has a charge, an atom does not
what is an isotope?
atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons
what is atomic mass?
the weighted average of the masses of isotopes
what are two example of isotopes?
carbon-14 carbon-12
how do you find the atomic mass of an element?
multiply the %s by 100, multiple the results by the mass number, add numbers together.
What happens when electrons go back to ground state?
they emit light
what is quanitization of energy levels?
the idea that electrons are only allowed to emit/gain specific amounts of energy
explain why the atomic masses of elements are not whole numbers
because they are weighted averages of isotopes
averages are weighted on natural abundance of isopoes
%s not whole #s= weighted average not whole #
(give example and definitions)
Why are the atomic spectra a series of bright lines and not a continuous spectum?
because of quantization
bright lines= energy emitted from electron
continuous spectrum= no specific energy levels
What determines what color an electron emits?
the amount of energy it releases
How can elements be identified?
by their color
when is a Bright Line Emission Spectrum produced?
when light given off by element passes through prisim
When is a continuous spectrum produced?
when white light passes through a prisim
