  1. CETIRIZINE HCL
    (seh-teer-uh-zene)
    (Zyrtec)


    Antihistamine
    • SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Drowsiness, Fatigue, Dry Mouth

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms. Relief of perennial allergic rhinitis caused by molds, animal dander, and other allergens. Avoid alcohol during cetirizine therapy.

  2. FEXOFENADINE
    (fex-oh-fi-na-deen)
    (Allegra)


    Antihistamine
    • SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Drowsiness

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Management of rhinitis, allergy symptoms, chronic idiopathic urticaria. Avoid alcohol, other CNS depressants.
    • 60 mg tablet: onset within 1 hr, peak 2-3 hours, duration about 12 hours
    • 180 mg tablet: duration 24 hrs
    • RX: Preg Cat C
  3. HYDROXYZINE
    (hye-drox-i-zeen)
    (Atarax, Vistaril)


    Antihistamine
    • SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Drowsiness, dry mouth

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Treatment of puritius, pre-op anxiety, post-op anxiety, nausea and vomiting, to potentiate opioid analgesics, sedation.

    PO: Onset 15-30 minutes, durations 4-6 hrs, avoid use with alcohol and other CNS depressants.

    Teach pt. dizziness/drowsiness may occur; use caution in potentially hazardous activities.

  4. LORATADINE
    (lor-a-ti-deen)
    (Claritin)


    Antihistamine
    • SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Drowsiness

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Managements of seasonal rhinitis. Avoid alcohol, other CNS depressants. Take on empty stomach 1 hr before or 2 hrs after meals.
    • Onset 1-3 hrs, peak 8-12 hrs, duration greater than or equal to 24 hrs.

    RX/OTC: Preg Cat B
  5. BECLOMETHASONE
    (be-kloe-meth-a-sone)
    (Beclovent, Beconase)


    Corticosteroid
    • SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Dystonia, hoarsness, Oropharyngeal fungal infections, headache, sore throat, Dyspepsia

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Used in chronic asthma treatment, seasonal or perennial rhinitis.
    • Nasal spray: onset 5-7 days (up to three weeks in some patients), Peak up to three weeks.
    • Inhaler: Onset 10 minutes
    • Use regular peak flow monitoring to determine respiratory status.

  6. FLUNISOLIDE

    (Nasolide, Aerobid)

    • Dysphonia, hoarsness,Oropharyngeal fungal infections, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, cold symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, unpleasant taste, upset stomach.

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Used in chronic asthma treatment, seasonal or perennial rhinitis.
    • Onset: few days
    • Use regular peak flow monitoring to determine respiratory status.

  7. FLUTICASONE
    (floo-ti-ka-sone)
    (Flonase)


    Corticosteroid
    • SIDE EFFECTS:
    • Dysphonia, harsness, Oropharyngeal fungal infections, headaches, sore throat, nasal congestion, cold symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, unpleasant taste, upset stomach.

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Used in chronic asthma treatment, seasonal or perennial rhinitis.
    • Nasal spray onset within 2 days, peak 1-2 weeks.
    • Use regular peak flow monitoring to determine respiratory status.

  8. MOMETASONE
    (moe-met-a sone)
    (Nasonex)


    Corticosteroid
    SIDE EFFECTS: Dysphonia, hoarsness oropharyngeal fungal infections, headaches sore throat, nasal congestion, cold symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, unpleasant taste, upset stomach.

    • NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Used in chronic asthma treatment, seasonal or perennial rhinitis
    • Nasal spray: onset few days peak up to 3 weeks.
    • Use regular peak flow monitoring to determine respiratory status.
