It was a long time ago that I dreamt to perfect my spanish in Spain and the past year I had the opportunity to get to know this beautiful country.
Hacía mucho tiempo que soñaba con perfeccionar mi español en España y el año pasado tuve la oportunidad de conocer este hermoso país.

Spain is situated in the Iberica Peninsula. It borders in the North with France, in the East with the Mediterranean Sea and in the West with Portugal. It has a surface (area) of 505.992 square kilometres.
España está situada en la península Ibérica. Limita al norte con Francia, al este con el mar mediterráneo y al oeste con Portugal. Tiene una superficie de quinientos cinco mil novecientos noventa y dos kilómetros cuadrados.

The population of Spain in 1991 was of 38.872.268 inhabitants. Since this (the population) grows in a manner very slow, now it has a population of 40 millions of inhabitants approximately, with a density average of some 80 inhabitants per square kilometre.
La población de España en mil novecientos noventa y uno era de trienta y ocho millones ochocientos setenta y dos mil doscientos sesenta y ocho habitantes. Como ésta crece de una manera muy lenta, actualmente tiene una población de cuaranta millones de habitantes aproximadamente, con una densidad media de unos ochenta habitantes por kilómetro cuadrado.

The most of them live in big cities and villages. Madrid, which counts with 3 millions of inhabitants, is the capital and the biggest city of Spain.
La mayoría de ellos viven en ciudades y pueblos grandes. Madrid, que cuenta con tres millones de habitantes, es la capital y la mayor ciudad de España.

I arrived at Madrid on 15th of January. When I came down of the airplane, a student of mine that was working at the Embassy of China was waiting for me in the airport. He kept working already 3 years as diplomatic officer in the Embassy, therefore he knew very well Spain and he had many spanish friends.
Llegué a Madrid el día quince de enero. Cuando bajé del avión, un alumno mío que trabajaba en la Embajada de China me esperaba en el aeropuerto. Llevaba ya tres años trabajando como funcionario diplomático en la Embajada, por eso conocía muy bien España y tenía muchos amigos españoles.

We chatted a good while and then he took me to the home of a spanish friend, where I briefly stayed myself. It was a house very beautiful, with three floors, a garden and a swimming pool. I lived on the second floor.
Charlamos un buen rato y luego me llevó a la casa de un amigo español, donde me alojé. Era una casa muy bonita, con tres pisos, un jardín and una piscina. Yo vivía en el segundo piso.

The room that I occupied was spacious and sunny, with a balcony that faced (gave to) the garden and a window that faced (gave to) the swimming pool. In my room there were a bed, a sofa, 2 shelves and a big wardrobe in it that I could keep the clothes.
La habitación que yo ocupaba era espaciosa y soleada, con un balcón que daba al jardín y una ventana que daba a la piscina. En mi dormitorio había una cama, un sofá, dos estantes y un gran armario en el que podía guardar la ropa.

The owner of the house was single and he dedicated himself to the commerce. Since he had various friends that helped (the commerce) to him, he did not have to worry himself much for his businesses.
El dueño de la casa era soltero y se dedicaba al comercio. Como tenía varios amigos que le ayudaban, no tenía que preocuparse mucho por sus negocios.

He got himself up very late, whereas I had to get up early because (y+q) I needed to prepare the breakfast and for arriving at the university where I was studying, I had to take first the bus and then, take the subway.
Se levantaba muy tarde, mientras que yo tenía que madrugar ya que necesitaba preparar el desayuno y para llegar a la universidad donde yo estudiaba, tenía que coger primero el autobús y luego, tomar el metro.

Sometimes, when I returned from the university he still was in the bed. He was a sleephead. But he liked very much the football and he never missed a match. Always he talked to me of his favourite team.
A veces, cuando yo regresaba de la universidad él todavía estaba en la cama. Era un dormilón. Pero le gustaba mucho el fútbol y nunco perdía un partido. Siempre me hablaba de su equipo favorito.

Every time that this (favourite team) won, he invited me to the cafe, that used to be full almost the whole day although, according to they said, there were more than 201.000 cafes in Spain. He was a chatterbox and when he began, he never finished.
Cada vez que éste ganaba, me invitaba a la cafetería, que solía estar llena casi todo el día aunque, según decían, había más de doscientos un mil cafeterías en España. Era un charlatán y cuando empezaba, nunca acababa.

He possessed broad knowledges and he told me many jokes. The first time I asked him where was The Door of the Sun, he answered me that it was a wrong name, cause there (there was not) neither door nor sun.
Poseía amplios conocimientos y me contaba muchos chistes. La primera vez que le pregunté dónde estaba la Puerta del Sol, me contestó que era un nombre equivocado, pues allí no había ni puerta ni sol.

And he said to me that for enjoying the sun it was better to go to the beach, because in the beach not only
I could see the sun, but also loads of cute girls.
Y me dijo que para disfrutar del sol era mejor ir a la playa, porque en la playa no sólo podía ver el sol, sino también a montones del chicas guapas.

He was saying to me often that the spanish girls were so attractive that they could stop the traffic. Of course, that was thing of the decade of 50 or 60. But it is true that the Spanish men they like throwing compliments upon seeing passing of the women.
Me decia a menudo que las chicas españolas eran tan atracivas que podían parar el tráfico. Claro, eso era cosa de la década cincuenta o sesenta. Pero es verdad que a los hombres españoles les gusta lanzar piropos al ver pasar a las mujeres.

Half a year passed in his house and from him I learned many things. I can never forget my days in Spain and, above all, this famous phrase of the spanish(s), that they know very well enjoying the life: "Working for not working" Friend, Do you believe that they have reason upon saying that?
Pasé medio año en su casa y de él aprendí muchas cosas. Nunca puedo olvidar mis días en España y, sobre todo, esta famosa frase de los españoles, que saben muy bien disfrutar la vida: "Trabajar para no trabajar". Amigo, ¿crees que tienen razón al decir eso?
