    the medium used to make art.

  4. what is relief carving?
    • the image to be printed is raised from the background.
    • examples include, steles ( an inscribed stone pillar), & the Ishtar Gate, & the west frieze of the Parthenon.
  5. what are the Greek sculpture periods?
    • Archaic: Stiff and unrelaxed, large free standing figures begin to be popular.
    • Classical: More idealistic, figures begin to move in space.
    • Hellenistic: more realistic and showed true human. Dramatic & often times violet images are also created. emotion and defects.
  6. what is contrapposto?
    a pose in which the weight of the body is balanced on one leg while the other is free & relaxed.
  7. what is slip?
    clay mixed with water. used to attach clay after scoring. also used to decorate.
  8. what is sgraffito?
    carving through one color to reveal another.

    gods & the prefect person towards the end more realistic components.

    the geometric period figures made of triangles and lines & realism - red & black.

    barrel vault~built to roof large ares. a series of round arches from front to back that form a tunnel. This made it possible to cover huge rooms & halls w/ half-round stone ceilings. had to have windowless walls.

    Groin vault- formed when 2 barrel vaults meet at a right angle, also allowed the placement of windows

    • negative space: Negative space refers tot he shapes around the objects.
    • positive space: positive space refers tot he shapes of the actual objects.

    worn by the Yoruba people to honor ancestors during public dances. covered from head to toe.
  17. what are Molas?
    • a textile made by sewing layers of colored cloth together to form patterns.
    • made by the Kuna indians

    a stepped mountain made of brick-covered earth. It satisfied the desire to create a monument that appeared to span the space between earthbound worshipers & their heavenly gods.

    • tombs built for the dead.
    • mastaba: a low flat tomb. rectangular tombs & sloping sides & contained a chapel & a false burial chamber w/ a real one.
    • step pyramid: several mastabas stacked together
    • Pyramid: built without steps & a point was added on the top.

    • symmetrical: exact images on both sides of a dividing line; balanced & equal weight
    • asymmetrical balance: different on the left side of the image as compared to the right side. uneven & unbalanced.
