    • similar to penicillin
    • divided into 3 generations
  2. fluoroquinolones
    • synthetic, broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs that inhibit bacterial DNA replication
    • patients should avoid antacids containing magnesium, calcium, or aluminum
  3. macrolides
    • inhibit bacterial protein synthesis
    • bactericidal or bacteriostatic
    • commonly used with patients with penicillin allergies
  4. penicillins
    • bactericidal drugs that work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis
    • should be taken 1-2 hrs after meals
  5. tetracyclines
    • bacteriostatic
    • inhibit bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis
    • effective against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms
    • cause photosensitivity
    • should be taken on empty stomach
    • not to be taken with antacids
