- May be triggered by invention of printing press and early education
- Frequency is 25% or more
- Twin studies show it has little genetic basis
Environmental contributors
- Early intense close focusing = development of myopia
- Study of Inuit groups showed generational difference b/w people with and w/out myopia
Correlative evidence
- Younger generation went to school and did a lot of reading = 20-40% rate of myopia
- Older generation had little childhood schooling = 3-5% myopia
