Cranial Nerves

  1. Olfactory
    • Sensory: smell- special sense
    • damage: no sense of smell and reduced sense of taste
  2. Optic
    • Sensory: vision- special sense
    • damage to vision
  3. Oculomotor
    • Motor (somatic)- skeletal extrinsic eye muscles exept Lat rectus and Superior oblique & raises the eyelid
    • Motor (visceral)- parasympathetic, intrinsic eye muscles
    • damage would have droopy eyelid, pupil dilation, difficulty focusing, downwardly abducted eye
  4. Trochlear
    • motor (somatic) superior oblique
    • damage would cause difficulty in downward gaze (stairs)
  5. Trigeminal
    • sensory (somatic) sensation from face eyes and mouth
    • motor (somatic) muscles of chewing ( mandibular branch)
    • damage to trigeminal neuralgia
  6. Abducens
    • motor (somatic) lateral rectus
    • damage to rotate eye laterally
  7. Facial
    • sensory: taste (2/3) special sense
    • motor (somatic) muscles of facial expression
    • motor (visceral) parasympathetic salivary glands; lacrimal glands
    • bell's palsy
  8. Vestibulocochlear
    • sensory: hearing and equilibrium
    • deaf, dizziness, abnormal eye movements
  9. Glossopharyngeal
    • sensory: taste 1/3 special sense
    • sensory: sensation from pharynx - somatic sense
    • motor (somatic)- swallow
    • motor (visceral) parasympathetic salivary gland
    • loss of gag reflex
  10. Vagus
    • sensory: taste (infancy, throat)
    • sensory (visceral): sensation from viscera (thoracic and abdominal)
    • motor (somatic): tongue and throat
    • motor (visceral): parasympathetic thoracic and abdominal viscera
    • ulcers
  11. Accessory
    motor (somatic) trapezius and sternocleidomastoid
  12. Hypoglossol
    motor (somatic)- tongue muscles
