central nervous system disorders

  1. convulsions/epilepsy - a neurologic disorder defines as paroxysmal, recurring seizures. It involves disturbances of neuronal electrical activity. Seizures can be partial, generalized (grand mal, petit mal, myoclonic, and atonic), or status epilepticus
MOA blocks the firing of neurotransmitters, resulting in a raised level of depolarization
  2. ADVERSE REACTIONS sedation and loss of congnitive processes
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS monotherapy is preferred over polytherapy, unless patient is not responding to monotherapy. A large number of drug interactions may occur with anticonvulsants because of induction or inhibition. Divalproex should be taken with water, not with carbonated drinks.
  3. ANTICONVULSANT AGENTS
    • carbamazepine - tegretol
    • clonazepam - klonopin
    • diazepam - valium
    • divalproex - depakote
    • fosphenytoin - cerebyx
    • gabapentin - neurontin
    • lamotrigine - lamictil
