Monitoring an IV Site and infusion

  1. Step 1
    Check the tubing for anything that could interfere with flow
  2. Step 2
    check the pump settings
  3. Step 3
    • Inspect the site for
    • -swelling
    • -leakage
    • -coolness
    • -pallor
    • which may indicate INFILTRATION. Ask the Pt if there is any pain/discomfort.
    • If so, notify the charge nurse.
  4. step 4
    • Inspect the site for redness, swelling & heat. Palpate for induration (small area of swelling). Ask the pt if ther is any pain. These finding may indicate phlebitis
    • If so, notify the charge nurse.
  5. Step 5
    • Inspect the site for pus and redness, warmth, induration (small area of swelling) and pain which may indicate local infection.
    • If so, notify the charge nurse.
