  1. trope
    an artful deviation from the ordinary or principal signification of a word
  2. euphemism
    substituting a more favorable term for a pejorative or socially delicate term
  3. hyperbole
    rhetorical exaggeration
  4. irony
    speaking in such a way as to imply the contrary of what one says, often for the purpose of derision, mockery, or jest
  5. metaphor
    figure of speech that says one thing is another in order to explain by comparison
  6. metonymy
    use of a related word to represent the actual object
  7. oxymoron
    paradoxical juxtaposition of words that seem to contradict one another
  8. paradox
    a statement that is self-contradictory on the surface, yet seems to evoke a truth nonetheless
  9. personification
    attribution of a lifelike quality to an inanimate object or idea
  10. rhetorical question
    figure of speech in the form of a question posed for rhetorical effect rather than for the purpose of getting an answer
  11. simile
    an explicit comparison, often employing “like” or “as”
  12. synecdoche
    a whole is represented by naming one of its parts (genus named for species), or vice versa (species named for genus)
  13. understatement
    deliberately making a situation seem less important or serious than it actually is
  14. zeugma
    use of two different words in a grammatically similar way but producing different, often incongruous meanings
  15. schemes
    an artful deviation from the ordinary arrangement of words
  16. antithesis
    opposition, or contrast, of ideas or words in a balanced or parallel construction
  17. parallelism
    similarity of structure in a pair or series of related words, phrases, or clauses
  18. tricolon
    three parallel elements of the same length occurring together in a series
  19. juxtaposition
    placement of two things closely together to emphasize comparisons or contrasts
  20. inversion
    inverted order of words in a sentence
  21. asyndeton
    omission of conjunctions between coordinate phrases, clauses, or words
  22. ellipsis
    omission of a word or short phrase easily understood in context
  23. alliteration
    repetition of the same sound beginning several words in sequence
  24. anaphora
    repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, or lines
  25. antimetabole
    repetition of words in reverse order
  26. polysyndeton
    employing many conjunctions between clauses, often slowing the tempo or rhythm
