Week 2

  1. Locate the Head of the Humerus.
The Head is the rounded and medial. It fits into the shallow glenoid cavity of the scapula. It is separated from the shaft by the anatomical neck.
  2. Anatomical Neck
Connected to the Head and is above the Surgical Neck.
  3. Greater and Lesser Tubercle
Opposite the head are two prominences. The Greater Tubercle is superior and the Lesser tubercle is inferior.
  4. Intertubercular Sulcus
A groove that separates the two tubercles.
  5. Surgical Neck
Is below the anatomical neck and is the common site of fracture.
  6. Deltoid Tuberosity
A roughened, triangular area located midway on the shaft.
  7. Lateral and Medial Epicondyle
The medial epicondyle is locate on the distal end of the humerus, medial side (same side as the head) and is commonly called the funny bone. The lateral epicondyle is distal and lateral.
  8. Condyles: Trochlea and Capitulum
Both are located on the distal end of the humerus. The trochlea is spool like, it is narrower and is medial. It articulates with the ulna. The capitulum is dome like and is lateral and articulates with the radius.
  9. Three fossa: Olecranon Fossa, Radial Fossa, & Coronoid Fossa
All three shallow depressions are located on the distal end of the humerus. The Olecranon fossa is on the posterior side and fits the olecranon process of the ulna. It is the deeper, larger depression. The radial fossa is located on the anterior side. It is a smaller depression located on the lateral side. The coronoid fossa is anterior and is medial to the radial fossa. It articulates with the coronoid process of the ulna.
