    • Stool re-absorbs water and swell; stimulating peristalsis
    • interfare with calcium and iron absorption
    • not for pt on bed rest or abd sutures

  2. Surfacant Laxatives

    • Detergent: facilitate mixing of fat and water to soften stool
    • little laxative effect
    • interfare with absorption of fat soluble vitamins
  3. Lubricant Laxative

    • Lubricate mass; Slow absorption of water
    • Can be Aspirated causing Lipid pneumonia
  4. Saline Cathartics

    • Causes water to be retained; distends bowel
    • Causes increased peristalsis w/ decreased motility time
    • stool is semifluid
    • Dehydration can occur
    • Not for pt w. heart problems or kidney disease
  5. Stimulant Cathartics
    5
    • Irritates GI mucosa; water is pulled into the lumen
    • Feces moves thru too rapidly for absorption; watery stool
    • Strongest; most abused
    • Cause lazy bowel syndrome
    • Affect calcium + Vit. D absorption; Alter Elect transport
