Stroke Volume
The stroke volume is the volume of blood ejected during a single cardiac contraction.
SV = EDV - ESV
Cardiac Output
The cardiac output is the blood flow per unit time (L/min).
CO = SV * HR
(Cardiac index = CO/BSA)
Stroke Work
Stroke work is the amount of work the heart does
during a single contraction
.
SW = VPP * SV
(whereas the RV and LV SV & CO are equal, their SW is different because of differences in pressure)
The Fick Principle (measurement of cardiac performance)
Basis:
Flow = Quantity consumed/(Arterial content - Venous content)
Thus:
Cardiac Output = O
2
Consumption/(a
o2
- v
o2
