The earliest phlebotomists drew blood in and attempt to cure diseases. In Europe during the middle ages, barber-surgeons performed bloodletting to balance the four humors, or bodily fluids, because an imbalance of the humors was thought to underlie disease. Earliest phlebotomists tools included lancets (called fleams) and suction cups, and they used ornate ceramic bowls to collect blood. Phlebotomists also applied leeches to patients skin for hours at a time to remove blood.
