Recognize the seven methods Jesus used to heal people and the examples of who was healed that way in the Gospels.

- Peter’s mother-in-law: Jesus touched her hand and her fever left her (Matthew 8:15).
- 2.Prayer
- Lazarus (John 11:41-43) – “Lazarus, come forth!”
- 3.Command
- Jesus spoke the word “Go!” to the Centurion (Matthew 8:5-13); “Rise!” to the paralytic (Luke 5:17-26); “Stretch out your hand!” to the man with the withered hand (Luke 6:6-10); and “Arise!” to the son of the widow in Nain (Luke 7:11-17).
- 4.Touch and command
- The leper (Luke 5:12-16) – Jesus touched him and said, “I am willing. Be clean!”
- 5.Someone touching Him
- The “many” in Matthew 14:34-36 and the hemorrhaging woman in Luke 8:42b-48.
- 6.Saliva or mud
- The deaf and dumb man (Mark 7:33) and the blind men of Mark 8:23 and John 9:6-7.
- 7.Ask the person to perform an act that shows they have faith
- To the blind man, “Go! Wash in the pool of Siloam” (John 9:7); to the man with a withered hand before hostile religious leaders, “Get up and stand in front of everyone... Stretch out your hand” (Luke 6:6-10); to the ten lepers, “Go show yourselves to the priests” (Luke 17:14).
- Jesus did this sometimes, not all the time. As a general rule of the Christian life, we must ask people to act on their faith or it will shrivel. E.g., at an altar call, ask people to come forward for prayer. If their faith is too weak for them to come forward, their faith is probably not going anywhere.

1. Recognize the four passages that show Jesus wanted His ministry of power and healing to be available to the Twelve disciples and other believers. For each passage, recognize who Jesus refers to and its citation (book, chapter and verse numbers. (Sect. 19)
- 1. Empowering the Twelve disciples (Matthew 10:1, 7-8a)
- • Jesus gave them authority to heal, preach, drive out demons – to announce the Kingdom of God is here and then demonstrate it.
- 2. Empowering the seventy (Luke 10:1, 8-9, 17f)
- • Jesus sent them out ahead of him, two-by-two, commanding them, “Heal the sick and then say the kingdom of God is near.” They did and returned with joy, exclaiming, “Even the demons submit to us in your name.” Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (In this historical context, snakes and scorpions were typical tools of Satan.)
- 3. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20)
- • At the Great Commission, Jesus said to the Eleven (and, in effect, to all believers), “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go [= the commission] and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
- • If God’s presence is with you and your life is pleasing to him, you will be successful.
- 4. Empowerment is available to “whoever believes in me” (John 14:12-14)
- • “Very truly I tell you, all who have faith in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

- • Paul longs to see them so that he might impart some spiritual gift to make them strong and that they might mutually encourage each other’s faith.

- • Paul urges Timothy, “Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.”
- 2 Timothy 1:6
- Paul urges Timothy, “I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
