    • anatomical term
    • - watery liquid secreted at the ciliary body that fills the anterior & posterior chambers of the eyes & provides nourishment for the cornea, iris, & lens
    • - (humor= fluid)
  24. Canal of Schlemm
    • anatomical term
    • - duct in the anterior chamber that carries filtered aqueous humor to the veins & bloodstream
  25. Choroid
    • anatomical term
    • - vascular layer beneath the sclera provides nourishment the the outer portion of the retina
  26. Ciliary Body
ring of muscle behind the peripheral iris that controls the power of the lens
  27. Ciliary Muscle
smooth muscle portion of the ciliary body, which contracts to assist in near-vision capability
  28. Ciliary Processes
    • epithelial tissue folds on the inner surface of the ciliary body
    • - secrete aqueous humor
  29. Conjunctiva
joining together; mucous membrane that lines the eyelids & outer surface of the eyeball
  30. Cornea
transparent, anterior part of the eyeball covering the iris, pupil, & anterior chamber that functions to refract (bend) light to focus a visual image
  31. Eyelid (Palpebra)
movable protective fold that opens & closes, covering the eye
  32. Fovea Centralis
    • pinpoint depression in the center of the macula lutea that is the site of sharpest vision
    • - (fovea= pit)
  33. Fundus (Base)
interior surface of the eyeball including the retina, optic disk, macula, & posterior pole (curvature @ the back of the eye)
  34. Glands of Zeis
    oil glands surrounding the eyelashes
  35. Meibomian glands
oil glands located along the rim of the eyelids
  36. Iris
    • colored circle
    • - colored part of the eye located behind the cornea that contracts & dilates to regulate light passing through the pupil
  37. Lacrimal Gland
gland located in the upper outer region above the eyeball that secretes tears
  38. Lacrimal Ducts
tubes that carry tears to the lacrimal sac
  39. Lacrimal Sac
structure that collects tears before emptying into the nasolacrimal duct
  40. Lens
transparent structure behind the pupil that bends & focuses light rays on the retina
  41. Lens Capsule
    capsule that encloses the lens
  42. Macula Lutea (Macula)
    • central region of the retina responsible for central vision
    • - yellow pigment provides its color
    • - (lutea= yellow)
  43. Nascolacrimal Duct
passageway for tears from the lacrimal sac into the nose
  44. Optic Disk
    • - exit: retinal nerve fibers, retinal veins
    • - entrance: retinal arteries
  45. Optic Nerve
nerve responsible for carrying impulses for the sense of sight from the retina to the brain
  46. Posterior Chamber
space between the back of the iris & the font of the vitreous filled with aqueous fluid
  47. Pupil
black circular opening in the center of the iris through which light passes as it enters the eye
  48. Retina
    • innermost layer that perceives & transmits light
    • - consist of: cones, rods
  49. Cones
    • within the retina
    • - cone-shaped cells within the retina that are color sensitive & respond to bright light
