The study of the earth and its features. The physical characteristics of an area, specially its surface.

What are the two types of location?
- Absolute and Relative.
- Absolute location is the exact physical location.
- Relative is the location as it relates to some other place.

What are hemispheres? Name them.
- A hemisphere is one of the halves the world is divided.
- Northern Hemisphere (the part of the earth north of the equator),
- Southern Hemisphere (the part of the globe south of the equator),
- Western Hemisphere (half of the earth that lies west of the Prime Meridian, an imaginary line that extends from the north to south pole through Greenwich England: usually used to refer to the Americas),
- Eastern Hemisphere (the half of the earth that lies east of the Prime Meridian: usually referring to Asia, Europe, Australia and Africa).

What is latitude?
What is longitute?
Latitude is the angular distance north or south from the equator to a particular location. The equator has a latitude of zero degrees. The North Pole has a latitude of 90 degrees North; the South Pole has a latitude of 90 degrees South.
Longitude are the half circles that run from north to south pole. Can range up to 180 degrees east and 180 degrees west. It uses the Prime Meridian, the line running through Greenwich England as the reference point.
Together the latitude and longitude form a grid that is used to locate every place on Earth.

What is the Equator?
The equator is an imaginary circle around the earth, halfway between the north and south poles.

Makers of maps.

What is a meridian and what is the Prime Meridian?
A meridian is a circular arc (a great circle) of longitude that meets at the north and south poles and connects all places of the same longitude. The prime meridian (0 degrees longitude) passes through Greenwich, England.

What are coordinates? How do you find them?
The point at which the latitude and the longitude meet. Used to describe the location of a place.

What is a time zone?
One of the 24 longitudinal sections that the world is divided into to assign time to different parts of the world. Each section is one hour ahead or behind its neighboring sections.

What is a map legend?
The key to a map that explains its symbols.

What is a grid?
A way to divide the map to help find where a specific location is.

What is a map scale?
Scale gives you a way to measure the distances between two points on a map, by telling you how many miles (or real distance) is represented by a each measured (inch or centimeter) unit in a map.

What is an inset map?
a map within a map that shows more detail to specific sections.

What is a compass rose?
A symbol that shows which way is north on a map.

What is cardinal direction?
Instead of using left and right to give directions, you use north, south, east and west.

What is intermediate direction?
The points between the cardinal directions (like northwest, southeast, etc.)

What are Boundaries?
The lines that separate two places.

What is a thematic map?
The map that provides information ona certain theme or subject.

What is a product map?
A map that shows where certain products come from.

What's a natural resource map?
A map that shows what resources are found in various parts of the earth.

What's a political map?
A map that shows the lines between different countries, states or territories.

What's a topographic map?
A map showing the elevation of different lands through the use of contour lines.

What is a population map?
A map that shows how many people live in different places.

What is a vegitation map?
A map that shows what kinds of plants grpw in different regions.

What is a precipitation map?
A map that shows how much rain falls in a certain area on average.

What is a mountain range?
A group of connected mountains.

Where is the mouth of a river?
Where the river flows into a larger body of water.

What is a sea?
A large body of salt water that connects to an ocean.

What is a peninsula?
A piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.

What is a plain?
A broad stretch of level land.

Define plateau.
A flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land.

What's a strait?
A narrow body of water that connects two larger bodies of water.

What's a glacier?
A large mass of ice moving slowlly over some land surfaces or down a valley.

The height of a location that is above sea level.

Define tributary.
A river that flows into a larger river.

Define delta.
A low, watery land that ppears at the mouth of the river.

What's a volcano?
An opening in the surface fo the earth that spews out molten rock, gases and rock fragments.

What is the difference between these maps:
The Mercator, the Interrupted Map, and the Robinson Map.
- The Mercator map is used for navigation, It is a cylindrical map projection.
- The Interrupted map tries to show the continents as accurately as possible.
- The Robinson map shows the whole world at once.
