  1. Canadian Contributions world war 1
    In the Air

    • Canada had no air force of its own
    • many canadians served in Britain's Royal Airforce

    • On the sea
    • Canada had a Royal Canadian Navy (1910); but many Canadians enlisted in Britain's Navy as well.
    • Halifax was an important repair base and shipping centre for the Allies.
    • Merchant Marine are civilians who ships and sailors supply and personnel ships across the Atlantic.

    Inflation: The rise in prices for goods and services that increases the cost of living and triggers the demand for a rise in wages

    Food Control: To prevent profiteering

    Rationing: Placing limits on the amount of certain goods that individuals may purchase or consume

    Victory Bonds: When you give money to the government which you could cash with interest, when the war was over.

    Female Suffrage: The right of women to vote

    Propaganda: Information designed to inspire and spread particular beliefs and opinions

    Internment Camps: Camps or centres for detaining people who are considered a threat
  3. Women roles WWI
    • Women took the mens jobs and started working in factories, mostly munition factories.
    • They worked as the Nurses on the Battle field.

    Women got the right to vote if their husband or son was at war.

    • The men that went to war don't receive their jobs when they return home.

  5. Winnipeg Strike
    • May 15
    • 30,000 people left their jobs for 6 weeks because the wages were to low and the working conditions were tough.

    The government sent mountain police in firing their guns. They arrested the strike leaders, deported people back to their home country. Couple were killed and wounded.

  7. Post war Canada
    • Canadian soldiers return home to many disappointment; there are no pensions or medical care for returning Veterans.
    • War industries close, and there are few jobs for the Veterans
    • Cost of living rises, and it becomes more difficult, for families to pay rent and buy food
    • Union becomes more prevalent in society as people look to them to raise wages and improve working conditions

    Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was made to regulate a private broadcasting and develop its own network with Canadian content in both French and English
  9. The NFB
    National Film Board developed canadian content for radios and movies. Protect the Canadian culture.
  10. Immigration Restrictions
    Canada had more restrictions on who was allowed immigrate to Canada. Russians and Eastern Europeans were often accused of being socialist revolutionaries and Canada would deport them.

    After the war the government relaxed some restrictions.

    • Britain wanted Canada's help
    • Canada decided not to follow Britains lead.
  12. Halibut Treaty
    • 1923
    • Canada took another step towards becoming independent
    • Canada and the US negociated a fishing treaty
    • British representative was going to sign the treaty
    • King said it was not necessary.
  13. King Byng Crisis
    • 1926
    • Prime Minister Governal General Clash
    • King did not allow Meigen to become Prime Minister, instead he formed a coalition
    • King denounced Governal General for refusing to call an election when he first asked
    • King won the election
    • No governel General has acted against the PM since.
  14. Balfour Report
    • Law passed by the British Government
    • Gave canada and other former British colonies are independent
  15. Statue of Westminister
    • Law passed by the British Government
    • Gives Canada control over its own law making
  16. Canada independence
    • Negative aspects
    • Britain might not help Canada when in need.
    • More contreversy, with government between Canada and Britain.

    • Positive Aspects
    • Canada doesn't have to go to war with Britain.
    • Canada is more independent, government plays a bigger role.
  17. League of Nations
    • L of N was an organizations based on the Idea of collective security ( an attack on one was an attack on all members).
    • The L of N was based on ideas from american president Woodrow Wilson
    • Countries who didn't comply with decisions of the L of N would have sanctions placed on them
    • Canada joined as an independent member
    • Britain joined, US did not.

    • Attack on one is an attack on all

    • Cons
    • One gets attacked your expected to go and help
    • If you join you would be Allies with every other country that joined.
  18. New Economics
    Stock market on the 1920's
    • New companies began on record numbers
    • Many companies were financed by investors
    • Investors received shares of the company
    • when profits of the company rose, so did the value of the investors shares
    • People began "buying on Margin" (purchased shares with borrowing money).
    • September 1929-stock values became very high, and people began to sell stocks in high numbers.
    • October 1929- More stocks avalaible than people wanted to buy;values fell quickly.
    • Too many stocks were sold then bought.

  19. Praries during the depression
    the praries were effected greatly because of the droughts and the Natural disasters, like dust storms.
  20. What is pogey
    Pogey is relief payments that brought shame to those who had no alternative

    • Receiving Pogey
    • people had to wait in line for hours and then publicly declare their failure and swear that they did not own anything of value.
  21. Depression proof
    Magazines and movie were still popular during the depression.
  22. Regionalism
    a concern for the affairs of ones own region over those of ones country

    • the east went to britain for help
    • the west were hit by droughts and sand storms which weakened them.
    • the central farmers were concerned about urbanization.
  24. On to ottawa Trek
    • Relief workers complained to ottawa about their living conditions and low wages.
    • Travelled eastward toward the government by trains.

    • Regina
    • The government forbids the railways to take them any farther and had blocked them from leaving Regina.
    • A riot broke out, RCMP attacked, 45 injured, 1 police officer was killed and a number were arrested.

    • King wins over Bennett.
    • Bennett leaves to England forever.
  26. International evernts
    Canada didn't get involved in most international affairs; there was a desire to remain isolated and a reluctance to speak out against European Powers

    • 1931- Japan invades Manchuria (China)
    • consequences- No economics or military sanctions from the L of N
    • Japan withdraws from the L of N

    • 1935-Italy attacks Ethiopia.
    • Economic sanctions applied against Italy
    • Italy withdraws from the L of N and takes over Ethiopia.

    • Hitler rebuilds his army with the revenge of the Treaty of Versailles.

    • fast attacking by the military
    • Blitzkrieg was so successful countries unable to handle it

    Treaty of Versialle- Harsh to Germany; created resentment Hitler ignores Treaty

    Fascism-Hilter controls what Germany does without public decisions

    • Imperialism-Germany's desire to expand territory
    • took over Rhineland, Austria, Czechoslovakia

    • Appeasement
    • (giving in) hopes Hitler won't do anything else
    • Allies (Britain, France, etc.) don't stop Germany
    • Allies scared of another war.
