Mechanism of Action
- Protein secreted by alpha cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas
- Converts stored glycogen in the liver to glucose
- Inhibits synthesis of glycogen from glucose
- Enhances conventional treatments for Ca channel blocker and beta-blocker OD by producing positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on the heart via stimulation of glucagon receptors in the myocardium
Indications
- Hypoglycemia without IV access
- Adjuvant treatment of toxic effects of Ca channel blockers and beta-blockers

Hypersensitivity
Precautions

Only effective if there are sufficient stores of glycogen in the liver

None
Dosage and Route
- Adult:
- Hypoglycemia: 1 mg (unit) IM/SC q 10-20 mins
- CCB/Beta blocker OD: 2-5 mg IM/SC/IV
- Pedi:
- 0.01-0.1 mg/kg IM/SC

- Onset: 5-20 mins
- Duration: 1-1.5 hours
