What is the formula for impulse?
Impulse = Force x time
-
What is the formula for acceleration?
- Acceleration = force/mass
- or
- Acceleration = change in velocity / change in time
-
What is the formula for Inertia
Force = mass x acceleration
-
What is the formula for momentum?
Momentum = mass x velocity
-
How does Impulse affect Momentum?
Impulse causes a change in Momentum. It can either increase or decrease momentum.
-
What is Newton's first law of motion?
A body remains at rest or in motion with a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force.
-
What is a contact force?
Forces that touch an object to exert their force eg, applied force, air resistance, wind, normal force, spring force, tension force.
-
What is a non-contact force?
Forces that act without touching the object eg, gravity, magentic force and electricity. Most common in sport is gravity.
-
When an object is flying through the air what forces are acting on it?
Gravity, possibly wind or crosswind and if the object is flying really, really fast then air resistence as well.
-
What is a vector?
Something that has both a direction and a magnitude (shown in a free body diagram as an arrow) eg velocity or acceleration
-
How would you do qualitative analysis?
- Preparation
- Observation
- Evaluation
- Intervention
-
How would you do quantitative analysis?
Measure velocities, measure acceleration, measure forces, measure joint angles
-
What is the force-time principle?
Same as Impulse - the longer force can act on an object the more time the force has to build up and can generate more.
-
What is the relationship between force and velocity in muscle contraction?
- Muscle can create ↑ force with a ↓ velocity of concentric contraction
- Muscle can resist ↑ force with a ↑ velocity of eccentric contraction
-
What is angular momentum?
If the mass is close to the axis of rotation, rotation is easier. This makes the moment of inertia smaller and results in an increase in angular velocity. Moving the mass away from the axis of rotation slows down angular velocity.
-
What is turbulent flow?
Turbulent flow causes the boundary layer of air separation to take place later. This causes a smaller pressure difference between the front and back of the ball as their is only a small pocket of turbulent wake at the rear of the ball
-
What is laminar flow?
Laminar flow causes the boundary layer separation to take place earlier. This causes a larger pressure differential between the front and rear of the ball as their is now a large pocket of turbulent wake at the back of the ball
-
What is newton's second law of motion?
The rate of change of momentum is proportional to the imposed force and goes in the direction of the force
-
How would you evaluate balance, speed, strength and flexibility?
Design a battery of fitness tests that are specific to your sport and have norms for each of these components of fitness such as stork stand, 30m sprint, grip strength or 1RM max, sit and reach or shoulder stretch. Pre and post test with some sort of intervention. Compare results to norms and sport requirements.
-
What are the principles of mental skills training?
Have the right attitude, set goals, establish motivation, work as a team (support each other), positive self talk, mental imagery, deal with anxiety, deal with emotions, ensure optimal arousal, block out distractions and maintain focus and concentration.
-
How would you plan and implement a mental skills training program?
Periodisation - split year into phases and cycles, work on skills in each phase, ensuring peaking and being careful of overtraining.
-
What is a holistic plan?
A plan that aims to train the whole athlete, the whole person. Physiology, biomechanics, mental skills, nutrition, skills, team, leadership etc.
-
What is torque?
- The turning effect produced when force is applied to a rotational axis. T = F * d, where
- T = Torque
- F = Force (here, the force applied perpendicular to the axis)
- d = Distance
-
What is the formula for angular inertia?
- A measure of an object's resistance to changes in rotation direction. Moment of
- Inertia has the same relationship to angular acceleration as mass has to linear
- acceleration. I = m r2 where I = moment of inertia, m = mass, r = distance between axis and rotation mass
