Archimedes

  1. What is Archimedes principle?
Archimedes principle states that that the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of fluid displaced by the object
  2. Define buoyancy?
The force of a fluid that pushes an object up
  3. State Archimedes principle in terms of buoyancy?
buoyant force on an object = weight of fluid displaced by the object
  4. State Archimedes principle in terms of density?
An object will float in a fluid if the density of the object is less than water
  5. What is the density of fresh water?
    1.00 g/cm3
  6. What is the density of salt water?
    1.02 g/cm3
  7. Will a boat float higher in ocean water than fresh water?
It will float higher in the salt water because the salt water is more dense (1.02 g/cm3) than the fresh water (1.00 g/cm3) which means that there is more force pushing up from the ocean water vs the fresh water
  8. What determines the the size of the buoyant force of an object?
If it weighs less than the fluid that it is in
  9. What happens when you place several ice cubes in a glass of water?
The ice cubes displace a certain amount of the water demonstrating Archimedes Principle.
  10. Why is it easier to lift a friend when you are both in the water?
The buoyant force of the water on the object equals the weight of the water the object displaces so the object SEEMS to weigh less
  11. Explain why an object sinks or floats in a fluid?
An object floats in a fluid because the buoyant force - THE UPWARD PUSH - on the object is equal to or greater than the object's weight - THE DOWNWARD PUSH (pull of GRAVITY)
