VET1400: Anti-Inflammatories/Analgesics

  1. Lidocaine
    • -immediate onset
    • -short acting (1-2 hours)
    • -Availability: injectable, topical, transdermal
  2. Bupivacaine
    • -longer onset time than Lidocaine
    • -Longer Acting! (3-5 hours)
    • -injectable only

    (can and is used together with lidocaine for extra pain relief)
  3. Proparacaine
    and
    Tetracaine
    • -ophthalmic preparations
    • -refrigerated to keep bacteria out (do NOT want bacteria in eye)
  4. 2 Groups of Analgesics
    USE: relieve pain

    1. Narcotic- opiod or opiod-like

    • 2. Non-Narcotic
    • -NSAIDS
    • -Steroids
    • -Others
