Location- forms most of the posterior surface of leg
Origin- lateral and medial condyles of femur
Insertion- posterior surface of calcaneus via Achilles tendon
Action- plantar flexes foot
Soleus
Location- lies underneath the gastrocnemius
Origin- head and shaft of fibula and posterior surface of tibia
Insertion- posterior surface of calcaneus via Achilles tendon
Action- plantar flexes foot; extends and rotates foot
Tibialis Anterior
Location- lateral to tibia
Origin- lateral condyle and lateral upper 2/3 of tibia
Insertion- 1st metacarpal and 1st cuneiform
Action- dorsiflexes and inverts foot
Peroneus Longus
Location- on lateral surface of fibula
Origin- lateral condyle of tibia and head and upper shaft of fibula
Insertion- 1st metacarpal and middle cuneiform
Action- plantar flexes and everts foot
Flexor Digitorum Longus
Location- medial side of leg beneath the soleus
Origin- posterior surface of tibia shaft
Insertion- distal phalanges of toes 2-5
Action- plantar flexes and inverts foot; flexes toes
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Location- on lateral anterior surface of leg
Origin- lateral condyle of tibia and proximal 3/4 of fibula
Insertion- 2nd and 3rd phalanges of toes 2-5
Action- extends the toes; dorsiflexes and everts the foot
Flexor Hallicus Longus
Location- on posterior surface of fibula
Origin- middle part of shaft of fibula
Insertion- distal phalanx of big toe
Action- flexes big toe; plantar flexes and inverts foot
Extensor Hallicus Longus
Location- on anterior surface of fibula
Origin- anteriomedial shaft of fibula
Insertion- distal phalanx of big toe
Action- dorsiflexes and everts foot; extends big toe
