Lower Extremities: Muscles That Act On The Ankle, Foot And Toes

  1. Gastrocnemius
    • Location- forms most of the posterior surface of leg
    • Origin- lateral and medial condyles of femur
    • Insertion- posterior surface of calcaneus via Achilles tendon
    • Action- plantar flexes foot
  2. Soleus
    • Location- lies underneath the gastrocnemius
    • Origin- head and shaft of fibula and posterior surface of tibia
    • Insertion- posterior surface of calcaneus via Achilles tendon
    • Action- plantar flexes foot; extends and rotates foot
  3. Tibialis Anterior
    • Location- lateral to tibia
    • Origin- lateral condyle and lateral upper 2/3 of tibia
    • Insertion- 1st metacarpal and 1st cuneiform
    • Action- dorsiflexes and inverts foot
  4. Peroneus Longus
    • Location- on lateral surface of fibula
    • Origin- lateral condyle of tibia and head and upper shaft of fibula
    • Insertion- 1st metacarpal and middle cuneiform
    • Action- plantar flexes and everts foot
  5. Flexor Digitorum Longus
    • Location- medial side of leg beneath the soleus
    • Origin- posterior surface of tibia shaft
    • Insertion- distal phalanges of toes 2-5
    • Action- plantar flexes and inverts foot; flexes toes
  6. Extensor Digitorum Longus
    • Location- on lateral anterior surface of leg
    • Origin- lateral condyle of tibia and proximal 3/4 of fibula
    • Insertion- 2nd and 3rd phalanges of toes 2-5
    • Action- extends the toes; dorsiflexes and everts the foot
  7. Flexor Hallicus Longus
    • Location- on posterior surface of fibula
    • Origin- middle part of shaft of fibula
    • Insertion- distal phalanx of big toe
    • Action- flexes big toe; plantar flexes and inverts foot
  8. Extensor Hallicus Longus
    • Location- on anterior surface of fibula
    • Origin- anteriomedial shaft of fibula
    • Insertion- distal phalanx of big toe
    • Action- dorsiflexes and everts foot; extends big toe
