MED-Ipratropium

  1. Functional Class
    Parasympatholytic Bronchodilator
  2. Mechanism of Action
    Acts directly on the smooth muscle of the bronchial tree by inhibiting interaction of ACh at receptor sites resulting in bronchodilation.
  3. Indications
    • Bronchospasm
    • Patients with reversible obstructive airway disease
  4. Contraindications
    Hypersensitivity to ipratropium, atropine, soya lecithin, peanut oil
  5. Precautions
    Use with caution in pregnancy and lactation
  6. Side Effects
    • N/V
    • Cramps
    • Dry mouth
    • Blurred vision
    • Worsening bronchospasm
    • Drying of bronchial secretions
    • Cough
    • Epistaxis
  7. Interactions
    None
  8. Dosage and Route
    • Adult: 0.5 mg in 2.5-3 mL NS via nebulizer q 6 hours
    • Pedi: 0.125-0.25 mg in 2.5-3 mL NS via nebulizer q 6 hours
