  1. Non-Fiction
    A story that is true.
  2. Fiction
    A story that is made up or imaginary.
  3. Comedy
    a light story that is funny and has a happy ending
  4. Diary
    A daily written record of personal experiences and observations.
  5. Biography
    an account of the series of events making up a person's life
  6. Autobiography
    a biography of yourself
  7. Drama
    play: a dramatic work intended for performance by actors on a stage
  8. Tragedy
    A play where many characters die.
  9. Poetry
    writing that expresses meaning through sound, and language choices so the reader has an emotional reaction.
  10. Characters
    The people in the story.
  11. Static Character
    A character that stays the same throughout the story.
  12. Dynamic Character
    A character that goes through changes.
  13. Conflict
    A struggle between two opposing forces.
  14. A conflict that is between two different people, like an argument as a feud.
    Man v. Man
  15. A conflict that comes from a bad experience or in the character's own mind or memory.
    Man v. Himself
  16. A conflict that comes from the struggle between a character and their environment.
    Man v. Nature or Man v. Wild
  17. Motive
    The reasons why a character does what they do.
  18. Setting
    The time and place of a story.
  19. Theme
    The main idea or lesson of a story.
  20. Protagonist
    The character dealing with a problem.
  21. Antagonist
    The character creating the problem.
  22. Symbolism
    Representing things by the use of symbols.
  23. Mood
    The feeling you get from a story.
  24. 1st Person Point of View
    Using "I" in the story.
  25. 2nd Person Point of View
    Using "you" in the story.
  26. 3rd Person Point of View
    Using "he" "she" or "it" in the story.
  27. 3rd Person Omniscient Point of view.
    Using he or she but knowing all the thoughts of all the characters.
  28. Characterization
    Describing a character, what they look like, and how they act.
  29. Simile
    A comparison using the words "like" or "as."
  30. Metaphor
    Comparing two things without using like or as.

    Ex. "His legs were rubber after the soccer game."
  31. Personification
    Giving human characteristics to something that is non-human.
  32. Flashback
    A break in the story when the narrator goes back in time to discuss something that already happened
  33. Foreshadowing
    Hints predicting future events in the story.
  34. Irony
    When something happens that you don't expect.
  35. Imagery
    When the author describes something so well it appeals to one of your five senses.
  36. What is this?
    A plot diagram.
  37. What is an inciting moment?
    The beginning part of the story that introduces the conflict.
  38. Rising Action
    Develops the conflict where the protagonist deals with the problem.
  39. Climax
    The high point of interest or suspense of the story. The most tense moment.
  40. Falling Action
    Sequence of events following the climax
  41. Resolution
    The ending of the conflict and solving the problem.
