Intradermal
- Used for sensitivity tests
- Use a TB syring: 1/4"-1/2", 26-27 gauge
- Bevel up
- 10-15 degree insertion: insert until bevel is covered (1/8")
- Inject slowly until blister/wheal forms
- Do Not Rub/massage site
-
Subcutanious
- 25-30 gauge needle, 3/8"- 1" (3/8"-5/8" most common): depending on size/weight of pt.
- 45-90 degree angle on insertion
- Abdomin, arms, thighs, upper ventral or dorsogluteal areas: (fastest - slowest absorbtion)
- Pinch/bunch skin-inject needle-release skin-push medication (10 sec/mL)
- No more then 1 mL at a time
- Aspiration is not necessary
-
Intramuscular
- Faster then SQ
- Deltoid (adult):
- Ventrogluteal:
- Vastus Lateralis:
- 72-90 degree insertion
- 20-25 gauge: biologic agents & aqueous solutions
- 18-25 gauge: oil-based solution
- Skin stretched flat between 2 fingers and held tight for insertion; or use Z-track
- Aspirate slowly (5 sec)
- Inject slow (10 sec/mL)
- Apply gental pressure on site with dry gauze. Do Not Rub/Massage site
-

Z-Track injection
- Recomended for IM injection. Helps prevent solution from escaping from muscle tisse.
- 1) Move skin to one side
- 2) Insert needle 90 degrees and aspirate for blood
- 3) Displace tissue is allowed to return to normal immediatly after needle is withdrawn.
- 4)Apply gental pressure on site with dry gauze. Do Not Rub/Massage site.
