Minority Crime and Social Policy

  1. Memory = history
    his story
    her story
    their story
do each individual story equal "our" story
we only get the version of "his" story and "her + their" story gets left out
issues of race persist in our society today.
  2. racial disproportionality in the criminal justice system
    - black skin bleeds into other areas including the images associated with certain names. (black sounding names, accents)

    - used as a way to marginalize and block access to the mainstream
  3. media messages
the medium is the message (television, radio, newspaper, the internet, magazines and books)

misrepresentation of Blacks, Asians, Latinos, Native Americans

people have formed impressions of other races based on what the media portrays
  4. 2004 Justice Department
American Indians are two times more likely to be victims of violent crime (rape, assault, robbery and etc)

    - more likely to be victims of interracial crime "harmed by someone outside of their race"
