GSLS Science Unit A Ch 2 & 3

  1. What is a protist?
Any of a large group of mostly single-celled, microscopic organisms.
  2. What does multicellular mean?
Made up of more than one cell.
  3. How do most protists reproduce?
Protist reproduce with fission, or cell division.
  4. Explain the process of how protists reproduce.
cell divides and makes two identical cells.
  5. How do protozoans get their energy?
Protist get their energy by feeding on other organisms.
  6. How do amoebas and parameciums move?
Amoebas use cytoplasm and pseudopasis to move around. Parameciums use cilia flagella to move around.
  7. How do algae obtain their food?
Algae get their food from photosynthesis.
  8. What is a diatom?
A microscopic, one-celled alga with a glasslike cell wall.
  9. What organism forms the base of the ocean food chain?
    plankton
  10. What are some uses for ethanol mentioned in the book?
Ethanol is used to make pickles, olives, and dairy produce or flavorings. Medicine and antifreeze
  11. What is fungi?
Any of a large group of organisms that feed on dead organisms or that are parasitic.
  12. What are spores?
A reproductive cell that can develop into a new organism.
  13. What is the role of fungi in nature?
Fungi break down this matter and return some nutrients to the soil. Without this process, Earth would soon become buried under mountains of dead waste material.
  14. What are saprophytes?
Organisms that live on dead or decaying matter, such as molds, mildews, yeasts, and mushrooms.
  15. How can fungi and plants be distinguished?
plants have photosynthesis and fungi doesn't
  16. Why do fungi not require light to survive?
Fungi doesn't use photosynthesis to survive, it feeds off other organisms.
  17. What is a moneran?
Any of mostly one-celled organisms in which the celled organisms in which the cell does not have a nucleus.
  18. What are the two large groups of monerans and what is the difference?
bacteria and blue-green bacteria--difference=bacteria feeds on dead organic matter or on living things and blue-green bacteria contains chlorophyll and carries out photosynthesis
  19. How quickly can bacteria reproduce and why do we not have to worry about the rate in which it reproduces?
Bacteria can reproduce every 20 minutes. We don't have to worry because the environment would not be able to provide enough nutrients for this large a mass of bacteria.
  20. What is the difference between a moneran and a virus?
a virus doesn't have a cell wall, a cell membrane, or cytoplasm. (a virus isn't a cell at all)
  21. How does a virus attack its host?
A virus attacks its host by attacking the cells and the virus make the cell make more virus and the cell breaks.
  22. What are communicable diseases?
Communicable diseases are diseases that can pass on to another person.
  23. What is a toxin?
Toxin is a poison produced by an organism.
  24. What are the different ways we can fight off infections and how do they work?
Get rid of virus with medicine or rest
  25. What is symbiosis?
A relationship between two organisms in which at least one organism benefits.
  26. How has God made bacteria helpful in our world?
They use bacteria to help cure people of viruses.
