  1. Who is John Locke?
    He believed people are rational. He was a supporter of representative democracy (left wing) (popular consent). Created “no taxation w/out representation". Wanted gov’t to protect life, liberty and property and believed in majority rule (if majority agrees it become law) aka father of liberalism
  2. Who is Jean-Jacques Rousseau?
    He believed ppl are born good (society corrupts them), humans are naturally free and equal, and that the will of the ppl should be the absolute authority
  3. Who is Thomas Hobbes?
    He believed humans are greedy, fearful and violent. He was against extreme individualism/freedom and believed society must give up freedom for security. His solution was basically a dictatorship where one person was responsible for everyone's security

    • He is a scottish political economist considrered the father of capitalism and wrote the "wealth of Nations" in 1776 in which he insisted individualism in a free market would strengthen the economy and benefit most.
    • He also believed that if ppl worked for themsevles, everyone would be better off.

    He was an influential Premier of Saskatchewan who greatly industrialized the province and worked to introduce free healthcare. Tommy douglas was an member of the CCF (now known as the NDP).

    He was an American economist who recieved the 1976 nobel prize. He is regarded as the founder of monetarism (controlling the supply of money to stabilize the economy).
  7. Who is Karl Marx?
    He was a German philosopher who is treated as a revolutionary activist, this is because he is famous for his political ideals including Marxism (A political ideology that aims for a classless society and criticizes capitalism). He also published the communist manifesto with Fredrich Engels.

    He was a socialist (known as the father of british socialism) who caused the co-operative movement and created utopian socialism (socialism created by persuading capitalists to give up means of production).

    He was an english philosopher who was interested in the protection of individual freedom and the promotion of individual decision making. He believed that the only limitations that should be placed on an individual were ones that protect others. He advocated free speech.

    He was an french enlightenment thinker who believed in the worth and accountability of an individual, and the accountability of the gov't. He also believed in seperation of powers (judicial, executive and legislative). Each branch would be dependent on each other so they could keep their power in check. For this system to work ppl must be in a gov't democracy.

    He is considered the father of capitalism. He criticized the french revolution in his book (reflections of the revolution of france) as he believed revolution should be democratic and not violent and went against christian ideals. He also predicted the implications of the revolution (reign of terror and napolean)

    He was an italian politician who wrote the prince in which he described his beliefs that it was the duty of the ruler to obtain and maintain power at any cost.

    • He was a person who advocated for a regulated market economy.
    • - wanted progressive taxation for equality and public education.
    • - wanted gov't control of key industries to promote wage and price fixation and social assistance to protect individualism.
    • Advocated for Fiscal policy (use of taxation to increase or decrease monies availible for investment) and Monetary policy (use interest rates to increase or decrease supply of money in the economy)
  16. Who was Khrushchev?
    He was the president of the USSR that came into power after Stalin. He saw many of stalins policies as unacceptable and inhumane. He was deposed after the failure of the cuban missile crisis and failing to fix the soviet economy.
  17. Who was JFK
    John f kennedy was the 35th american president. Who seeked to remove America from the vietnam war. He was involved in the bay of pigs fiasco and the cuban missile crisis.
