When peoples opinion become similar because they are influenced by their surroundings/each other and therefore end up with similar more moderate opinions

An ideology that is focused around the group. It holds ideals such as group wellbeing, shared responsibility, and the greater good for the most people

He believed people are rational. He was a supporter of representative democracy (left wing) (popular consent). Created “no taxation w/out representation. Wanted gov’t to protect life, liberty and property and believed in majority rule (if majority agrees it become law) aka father of liberalism

He believed ppl are born good (society corrupts them), humans are naturally free and equal, and that the will of the ppl should be the absolute authority

He believed humans are greedy, fearful and violent. He was against extreme individualism/freedom and believed society must give up freedom for security. His solution was basically a dictatorship where one person was responsible for everyone's security

What is Liberalism? What about the modern and classical versions?
- Liberalism is an ideology built on the values on individualism. It is built around liberty (freedom), self-sufficiency and freedom.
- Modern liberalism calls for more government involvement in the economy. Classical liberalism calls for politcal freedom and a free economy.

An Anarchist is a person who promotes anarchy (a society without government control - everyone has to work together - far left)

They are a person who advocates for strict political control in society (authoritarianism - no democracy and one central power).

Who is a Communist?
A person who advocates for communism (a political belief that originates from Karl Marx, all property is publicly owned and each person is paid according to their work). Far left.

What is a Socialist?
A socialist is a person who advocates for socialism (an ideology that believes that means of production should be publicly owned, it is left wing, it comes before communism).

Rule of law states that no pwerson is above the law no matter how powerful and must abide by it. It is hated by dictators.

Private property is things that are owned by individuals and are used for profit.

Self interest is the focus of an individual on their owned needs economically or physically.

Laissez Faire is a policy that strives for minimum government control is either economics or politics (Hands-Off).

Who was Tommy Douglas?
He was an influential Premier of Saskatchewan who greatly industrialized the province and worked to introduce free healthcare. Tommy douglas was an member of the CCF (now known as the NDP).

Who is Milton Friedman
He was an American economist who recieved the 1976 nobel prize. He is regarded as the founder of monetarism (controlling the supply of money to stabilize the economy).

Who is Adam Smith?
Adam smith is considered the father of capitalist and pusblished the wealth of nations in 1776 in order to demonstrate that in a free market economy self interest would benefit individuals and the economy. He believed that if people worked first and foremost for themselves, everyone would be better off.

Who is Karl Marx?
He was a German philosopher who is treated as a revolutionary activist, this is because he is famous for his political ideals including Marxism (A political ideology that aims for a classless society and criticizes capitalism). He also published the communist manifesto with Fredrich Engels.

He was a socialist (known as the father of british socialism) who caused the co-operative movement and created utopian socialism (socialism created by persuading capitalists to give up means of production).

Who is John Stuart Mill?
He was an english philosopher who was interested in the protection of individual freedom and the promotion of individual decision making. He believed that the only limitations that should be placed on an individual were ones that protect others. He advocated free speech.

Who was Montesquieu?
He was an french enlightenment thinker who believed in the worth and accountability of an individual, and the accountability of the gov't. He also believed in seperation of powers (judicial, executive and legislative). Each branch would be dependent on each other so they could keep their power in check. For this system to work ppl must be in a gov't democracy.
