Morphine

    • binds to opiate receptors in the CNS

  3. Indications:
    • Severe pain
    • pulmonary edema
    • pain associated with MI
  4. Contraindication:
    • hypersensitivity
    • head injury
    • abdominal pain
    • volume depletion
  5. Precautions:
    • alcoholism
    • respiratory depression
    • pregnancy
    • hypotension
  6. Side Effects:
    • Dizziness
    • confusion
    • sedation
    • bradycardia
    • urinary retention
  7. Dosage:

    Routes:
    • IV: 2-5 mg followed by 2 mg every few minutes to effect
    • IM: 5-15 mg based on patients’ weight
