Cervical Muscles

  1. cervical flexor
    • Deep Flexor Muscles:
    • - Important role in cervical stabilization, supporting cervical curve
    • - Cervical retraction (tucking chin)
    • - Longus colli, longus capitis
    • - Rectus capitis anterior and rectus capitis lateralis
    • Superficial Flexor Muscles:
    • - Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) anterior fibers
    • - Submandibular muscles
  2. cervical extensors
    • Deep Layer: suboccipital muscles
    • ○ Rectus capitis posterior major and minor
    • ○ Obliquus capitis superior and inferior
    • ○ Extend, lateral flexion, rotation
    • ○ Stabilize and provide proprioceptive input
    • ● Middle Layer:
    • ○ Semisplenius capitis
    • ○ Splenius capitis
    • ○ Extend, lateral flexion, rotation
    • ● Superficial Layer:
    • ○ Trapezius - elevates the shoulder, moves the scapula, lateral flexion
    • ○ Levator Scapula - extension, elevates the shouder
  3. Cervical Muscles - Lateral Flexors
    • Scalenes - 3 muscles
    • ○ Anterior Scalene and Middle Scalene attach to first rib
    • ○ Posterior Scalene attach to 2nd rib
    • ● Affected by thoracic breathing with accessory muscles vs.
    • diaphragmatic breathing.
    • ○ This may cause scalene tightness which increases cervical
    • loading.
    • ○ Helpful to note patient’s breathing patterns**
