cervical flexor
- Deep Flexor Muscles:
- - Important role in cervical stabilization, supporting cervical curve
- - Cervical retraction (tucking chin)
- - Longus colli, longus capitis
- - Rectus capitis anterior and rectus capitis lateralis
- Superficial Flexor Muscles:
- - Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) anterior fibers
- - Submandibular muscles
-
cervical extensors
- Deep Layer: suboccipital muscles
- ○ Rectus capitis posterior major and minor
- ○ Obliquus capitis superior and inferior
- ○ Extend, lateral flexion, rotation
- ○ Stabilize and provide proprioceptive input
- ● Middle Layer:
- ○ Semisplenius capitis
- ○ Splenius capitis
- ○ Extend, lateral flexion, rotation
- ● Superficial Layer:
- ○ Trapezius - elevates the shoulder, moves the scapula, lateral flexion
- ○ Levator Scapula - extension, elevates the shouder
-
Cervical Muscles - Lateral Flexors
- Scalenes - 3 muscles
- ○ Anterior Scalene and Middle Scalene attach to first rib
- ○ Posterior Scalene attach to 2nd rib
- ● Affected by thoracic breathing with accessory muscles vs.
- diaphragmatic breathing.
- ○ This may cause scalene tightness which increases cervical
- loading.
- ○ Helpful to note patient’s breathing patterns**
