Diltiazem/Cardizem

  1. Class:
    Calcium channel blocker
  2. Action:
    • Slows SA and AV node conduction
    • Causes coronary and peripheral vasodilation
    • Decreases myocardial oxygen demand and contractility
  3. Indications:
    Rapid ventricular rates associated with atrial fibrillation and flutterPSVT
  4. Contra-Indications:
    • Hypotension
    • 2nd and 3rd degree AV block
    • Wider complex tachycardia
    • Cardiogenic shock
    • Hypersensitivity
  5. Precautions:
    • Hypotension
    • Should not be used in pts. on intravenous Beta blockers
    • Keep drug refrigerated
  6. Side Effects:
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Hypotension
    • Dizziness
    • Headache
    • Chest pain
  7. Dosage:

    Route:
    • 0.25 mg/kg IV bolus
    • Maintenance dose 5-15 mg / hr
