Operant conditioning

  1. Operant conditioning
Operant conditioning: a three-phase learning process that involves an antecedent, behaviour, and consequence, whereby the consequence of a behaviour determines the likelihood that it will reoccur
  2. Antecedent
Antecedent - A stimulus that causes a voluntary behaviour to occur
  3. Behaviour
Behaviour - A voluntary action in response to an antecedent
  4. Consequence
Consequence - An event following an action that makes it either more or less likely to occur again
  5. Reinforcement
Reinforcement: A consequence that increases the likelihood of a behaviour reoccurring.
  6. Positive reinforcement
Positive reinforcement: the addition of a desirable stimulus, increasing the likelihood of a behavior reoccurring.
  7. Negative reinforcement
Negative reinforcement: the removal of an undesirable stimulus, increasing the likelihood of a behaviour reoccurring.
  8. Punishment
Punishment: A consequence that decreases the likelihood of a behaviour reoccurring.
  9. Positive punishment
Positive punishment: the addition of an undesirable stimulus, decreasing the likelihood of a behaviour reoccurring
  10. Negative punishment
Negative punishment: the removal of a desirable stimulus, decreasing the likelihood of a behaviour reoccurring.
