  1. Reign of Terror
    A period of remorseless repression and bloodshed from the government in the french revolution.
  2. Bourgeoise
    A characteristic which refers to materialistic goods
  3. Collective Conscious
    A set of shared beliefs and ideas that at as an undying force within a society
  4. Republic
    A state where supreme power is held by a representative who is elected by people
  5. Revolution
    A forcible overthrow of a government or social order
  6. Absolutism
    The absolute belief in principles in a political, philosophical or ethical matter
  7. Feudalism
    A social system in the middle ages, wealth would flow from the bottom works (many) to the top (few). Ruled by the crown or a king.
  8. Nationalism Factors:
    • 1. Geography: The land we live on is a strong motivation, it creates borders of nation-states, we have a connection to our land.
    • 2.Language: How we communicate, it represents identity, losing it can result in identity loss.
    • 3.Religion: Many nations and nation-states are built around religion as it is a strong factor.
    • 4.Ethnicity and Culture: belonging can be created through shared ancestry and cultural beliefs. Ethnic similarities and difference link to different societies
    • 5.Citizenship: Citizens are all part of the same nation-state. Citizenship display being part of a nation-state
    • 6.Spirituality: People's relationship's with the land and history connects them to others, does not have to be religion.
    • 7.Politics: Many people believe that they have sovereignty to start a nation and hold it.
  9. Xenophobic
    intense dislike or hatred of people from other cultures or countries
  10. Nationalism vs Patriotism
    Patriotism is loving your country for what it does while Nationalism is loving your country no matter what

  12. Sovereignty
    Supreme power or authority one holds. This could be used to start a nation or nation-state.
  13. Nationalism
    The collective, shared sense of belonging of people who identify themselves as a nation-state (loyalty).
  14. Nation conflicts
    One nation-state may not recognise another another as an individual but rather a part of them. Sometimes religion will influence things a nation does that others won't agree with.
  15. Nation-State
    A population that lives in the same geographical area. A nation-state must: be ruled by a government, have defined territory and be recognised by other countries (possible conflict)
  16. Nation vs State
    A nation is a group that shares something in common. A state is a population that must be in the same area
  17. Nation
    A large group that share something in common, A nation does not need to be in one place and can be spread all over the world
  18. Developing a Nation
    • 1.Group of people sense they share something in common
    • 2.People naturally seek a sense of belonging, so they organize into a collective/group
    • 3.People identity themselves as a nation
  19. Factors that make a nation's identity
    Ethnic background, values and beliefs, language and communication, Religious beliefs, Geography, Politics and Citizenship
