- 1. Geography: The land we live on is a strong motivation, it creates borders of nation-states, we have a connection to our land.
- 2.Language: How we communicate, it represents identity, losing it can result in identity loss.
- 3.Religion: Many nations and nation-states are built around religion as it is a strong factor.
- 4.Ethnicity and Culture: belonging can be created through shared ancestry and cultural beliefs. Ethnic similarities and difference link to different societies
- 5.Citizenship: Citizens are all part of the same nation-state. Citizenship display being part of a nation-state
- 6.Spirituality: People's relationship's with the land and history connects them to others, does not have to be religion.
- 7.Politics: Many people believe that they have sovereignty to start a nation and hold it.

One nation-state may not recognise another another as an individual but rather a part of them. Sometimes religion will influence things a nation does that others won't agree with.
