Neural plasticity

  1. Synaptic plasticity
Synaptic plasticity: the ability of synaptic connections to change over time in response to activity or experience.

    • Three mechanisms of synaptic plasticity:
    • sprouting
    • rerouting
    • pruning.
  2. Long-term potentiation
Long term potentiation: The long-lasting and experience-dependent strengthening of synaptic connections, as a result of repeated high-intensity stimulation.
  3. Long term depression
Long term depression: The long-lasting and experience-dependent weakening of synaptic connections as a result of repeated low-intensity stimulation.
  4. Sprouting
Sprouting: the ability of dendrites or axons to develop new extensions or branches.
  5. Rerouting
Rerouting: the ability of a neuron that is connected to a damaged neuron to create an alternative synaptic connection with an undamaged neurons.
  6. Pruning
Pruning: the elimination of synaptic connections that are not adequately activated.
