  1. what is a nation?
    • a group of people who feel connected to one another through means of :
    • ethnic backround
    • cultural values and beliefs
    • language
    • geography
    • politics
  2. what are the steps of developing a nation?
    • 1. a group of people sense that they share something in common.
    • 2. people naturally want a sense of belonging and acceptance so they organize themselves into a group 
    • 3. then people may identify themselves as a nation
  3. what is a nation-state?
    • it has to be a country with internationally recognized borders. 
    • must have the right to govern themselves independantly.
    • and must have defined territory.
  4. what is nationalism?
    it is the sense of belonging or loyalty people feel towards there nation state. it can also be the beleif that your nation-state is better than others.
  5. What is xenophobic?
    having intense hatred for those not apart of your nation-state.
  6. What is Ethnic Nationalism?
    Nation that is primarily defined by language, religion, ethnicity. it is the nation that creates the state.
  7. what is civic nationalism?
    Nationhood is defined by common citizenship. nationhood is granted regardless of ethnicity, colour etc. people united in patriotism.
  8. What are the four factors resulting in the french revolution?
    • the fall of the roman empire.
    • Development of feudalism and mercantalism
    • the renaissance and elightenment
    • American Revolution.

    • high taxes to roman territories.
    • barbarian invasion.
    • rise of Christianity (free people and slaves are equal)
  10. what were the main ideas of the renaissance?
    • 1. humanism (capability of humanity and the people)
    • 2. movment away from church
    • 3. important for people to be open minded and curious.
  11. what was the american revolution?
    it was the colonies in North America revolting against unjust taxes from Britain. britain was so far away so it was easier for the colonies to unite. colonists were banned from trading with any other place other than britain.
  12. What documents came out of the American revolution?
    • The declaration of independance: American colonies officially severed their connection with britain. it summarized the colonists motives.
    • united states constitution: established americas national government.
  13. What is a collective conscious?
    an awareness shared by many, that united a country and was a defining moment in their history.
  14. What was the declaration of the rights of man and citizen?
    it was a document entailing that no single person could hold authority and every man is treated equal.

    • 1. dissolved royal administeration
    • 2. shifted power from paris to 83 individual districts
    • 3. limited the power of the king and held an elected legeslative assembly

    • centralized administration
    • created a tution based school system (lychee school system)

    • stated all men are equal before law.
    • guranteed freedom of religion as well as freedom to work in any occupation.
    • placed the interest of the state ahead of the interests of the individual.

    After the napoleonic wars, Europe wanted peace. borders were set and agreed to.
