  1. What were the middle colonies (4 state names)?
    NY, NJ, PA & DE.
  2. What made the Middle Colonies good for farming?
    Mild climate, fertile soil, cold wet winters and long hot summers.  Plenty of rain.
  3. Why were the rivers in the Middle Colonies important?
    They allowed farmers to send their crops to the cities.  They allowed merchants to buy and sell goods between the colonies and Europe.
  4. What were the 2 main rivers in the Middle Colonies and what cites did they support?
    • Hudson River -- New York City
    • Delaware River -- Philadelphia
  5. Define indentured servant.
    A person who works for a certain period of time to "pay back" the cost of their passage to the colonies.  Once their contract was over, usually in 4 or 7 years, they were free people.
  6. Who were the Lenni Lenape?
    A large group of Native Americans who lived near the Delaware River.  They were also called the Delaware.
  7. How was Pennsylvania founded?
    King Charles II gave the land to William Penn to pay off a debt.  Penn was a Quaker and founded Pennsylvania on the basis of religious freedom and democracy.
  8. What does the name "Pennsylvania" mean?
    Penn's Woods.
