nationalism

  1. What is a nation? How does a nation form?
It is a group of people who feel connected to one another, in on of five ways. 1. A group of people sense they share something in common. 2. since people naturaly feel a sense of belonging and acceptance so thye organize as a group/collective. 3. Then people may identify themselves as a nation (people can belong to more than one nation).
  2. What is the difference between a Nation and a nation-state? What is similar?
A nation is a large population that shares the same cultures, beliefs, etc. It does not have set borders and does not have to be located on a map. While a nation-state is a country with clear geographic boundaries and that is internationally recognized. They are a seperate politcal entity (ruled by their own gov't) and have a defined population. There are usually numerous nations within a nation-state.]

The similarities are that both have a population and both have a shared history.
  3. What is nationalism? What are examples of nationalism movments? What do nationalists advocate for?
Nationalism is the collective, shared sense of belonging of people who identify themselves as a nation state, a feeling of loyalty towards your country. Examples of nationalism movements are quebecois, Alt-Right extremists and the french revolution.  Nationalists advocate for national sovereignity above anything else. They often emphasize the need for unity in order for everyone to stick together.
  4. What is patriotism vs nationalism?
Patriotism is loving your country for what it does. It is the love for or devotion to ones country. Nationalism is loving your country no matter what it does (more extreme). But it can also mean being ethnocentric towards your nations traditions and culture.
  5. What can nationalism lead to when taken too far? What is xenophobia?
It can lead to ethnocentrism, the belief your nation is better than others. These people become xenophobic, meaning they harbour an intense dislike or hatred of people from other countries or cultures.
  6. What are the Factors that contribute to a sense of nationalism?
    • 1. Geography: The land we live on can be a strong motivation for nationalist movments, it is the way we live and how we survive which creates a connection. Borders can also be a motivator. It can also be significant to religon.
    • language: is how people communicate and it makes up peoples identities (loss of language=loss of identity)
    • 3. Religous: Many nations and even some nation states are built around religon (Iran, Saudia arabia). It gives people a sense of belonging and brings them together, but it can also pull them apart.
    • 4. Ethnicity & culture: A sense of belonging can be created through ethnicity (shared ancestry & cultural beliefs and values). Ethnic similarities are often linked to religon and are characterisitics shared within a society.
    • 5. Citizenship: citizens are all apart of the same nation state and display citizenship by participating in the nation (and therefore nation-state) by following the rules and voting.
    • 6. Spirituality: A peoples relationship with the land is somtimes linked to spiritual connections that unite them. There can also be a link to ancestors or traditions, though spiritually does not nessecarily have to be related to religon.
    • 7. Politics: Many believe that if a group of people have sovereignity (political independence) they form a nation. Some take this even further and believe all that is needed is the desire for sovereignity (these people believe in self-determination).
  7. What are civic nations?
Civic nations are made up of people who share politicals views/understandings, they are people who are living together based on acceptance of shared values and beliefs expressed in written documents (laws/constitutions). Nationhood is defined by common citizenship and is granted regardless of ethnicity, race, colour, religon, gender, language. They are people united in patriotic attachment.
  8. What are ethnic nations?
They are nations that are primarily defined by language, religon or customs & traditions (ethnicity). Ethnic nationalists believe that it is not the state that creates the nation but the nation that creates the state. The glue that holds these people together is pre-existing ethnic characteristics.
  9. Why do borders exist?
They exist to seperate groups of people in order to give them a unique sense of identity and a feeling of belonging to that group (prevents homogenization).
