What is illoprost? (alloprost) in relation to prostacyclin? and why is it used instead?
It is an analong- basically similar in function and structure however it has greater chemical stability which makes it better for clinical use
It dissolves better in saline and had a longer half life (20-30 minutes)
What are some of the functions of illoprost?
Vasodilation
platelet inhibition
cytoprotection
What should be watched for when using illoprost and why?
facial flushing and headaches caused by the vasodilation effect
What condition is iloporst used to treat?
pulmonary hypertension (it's harder for the heart to pump blood in the arteries of the lungs)
