Describe the process of DNA replication. (6)
The double helix opens- it untwist and unzips (hydrogen bonds are broken by enzymes) prior to replication.
Free nucleotides enter the nucleus from cytoplasm.
New nucleotides form a new chain.
Each strand acts as a template to make the opposite strand from complimentary nucleotides.
Each new DNA molecule is therefore half new and half old, identical to the original and each other.
Each new piece of DNA rewinds to form a double helix.
Prior to replication, what does the double helix do?
Double helix opens - it untwist and unzips (hydrogen bonds broken by enzymes) prior to replication
After the double helix opens, untwists and unzips, what happens then?
Free nucleotides enter nucleus from cytoplasm and the new nucleotides form a new chain.
How is it ensured that the opposite strand made from complementary nucleotides ?
Each strand acts as a template to make the opposite strand from complementary nucleotides.
Each new DNA molecule is then therefore what?
Half new and half old, identical to the original
What do each new piece of DNA do then to complete the replication process?
Each new piece of DNA rewinds to form a double helix.
What is DNA profiling?
A method of making a unique pattern of bonds from the DNA of a person which id used to distinguish one persons DNA from as mother person’s.
What are the four main steps in DNA profiling ?
DNA isolation
Cutting
Separation
Pattern analysis
