Competency- Meds

  1. Lasix (furosemide)- what is it
    • this is a diuretic sometimes called water pill helps you get rid of fluid in the body
    • removes excess fluid to help prevent edema
  2. Lasix- S/S to look out for
    • dizziness or fainting so stand up from lying or sitting slowly
    • dehydration- report excess thirst, headache and dizziness
    • you'll want to take this med in the morning to prevent having to pee all night
  3. Lasix Labs
    can decrease your elyte levels Ca, Mg, K and Na so you may have to get routine labs
  4. Viagra (Sidenafil)
    increase ability to exercise and complete ADL w/out SOB, dizziness and fatigue
  5. Viagra (Sidenafil)- look out for
    • headache, heartburn, N/V/D nosebleeds, flushing, muscle pain, change in color vision, and sensitivity to light
    • report these immediately if they are severe enough to interrupt daily life
  6. KCl-
    • potassium chloride supplement
    • used to prevent or treat low potassium levels
  7. KCl- look out for
    • Report changes in heart rate, rhythm or intensity
    • you will probably need to get lab redraws to check your levels so make sure you go to your appointment in a timely manner
  8. Adempas
    blood vessel dilator to help keep blood vessels open
  9. Adempas- look out for
    report any signs of a bad reaction like dizziness or faint feeling when standing from sitting or lying down
  10. Norvasc (amlodipine)
    lowers BP to reduce pressure in your lungs and reduce symptoms
  11. Norvasc (amlodipine)- look out for
    • new or worsening chest pain, pounding sensation in chest or fainting
    • Side effects could be headache, nausea, dizziness and flushing
  12. Prednisone
    • supplement/booster to steroids naturally present in the body
    • to help decrease inflammation and painful tightening of your skin or any area of the body
  13. Prednisone- look out for
    • allergic reaction like facial swelling, SOB, and/or skin rash
    • Can decrease immune system ability to fight infections so watch out for signs of infection
  14. Nifedipine (Procardia)
    lowers bp that causes vessel damage
  15. Nifedipine (Procardia)- look out for
    headache, nausea, dizziness, flushing, heartburn, muscle cramps, constipations, cough and decreased sexual ability
  16. Omeprazole
    proton pumo inhibitor decreases stomach acid that can enter ulcers in stomach
  17. Omeprazole-look out for
    • constant stomach pain and diarrhea
    • newly occurring vomiting and constipation
  18. Captopril
    • blood vessel dilator
    • Scleroderma- could cause life threatening blood vessel tightening that affects the kidneys
  19. Captopril- look out for
    • dizziness is common especially in first few days of taking this med so be careful moving from lying/sitting to standing.
    • report S/S of infection or if you develop a persistent dry cough
  20. Methotrexate
    med used to treat cancer, arthritus and psoriasis by lowering immune responce and reducing inflammation
  21. Methotrexate- look out for
    • allergic reactions- rash, itching, tightening of throat or trouble breathing
    • report very bad stomach pain, inability to pee or have blood in pee, trouble breathing, seizure, confusion and bone pain
    • med can decrease appetite, hair loss, feel tired or weak, stomach pain or common cold symptoms
  22. Oxycontin
    opioid pain medication to relieve pain where skin has hardened or tightened(scleroderma)
  23. Oxycontin- look out for
    • Avoid driving or other heavy tasks until you know how the med affects you.
    • Can cause dizziness so rise slowly from lying down
    • Can cause constipation or stomach pain and slow shallow breathing
    • Do not take more than prescribed and only take when you are in pain not necessarily every __hrs you can
  24. Depakote
    this is a mood stabilizer for mood disorders
  25. Depakote- look out for
    allergic reactions like rash, trouble breathing, facial and tongue swelling
  26. Lithium
    decrease abnormal activity in the brain to regulate moods and lessen manic episodes
  27. Lithium- look out for
    • regularly scheduled blood draw are required and important to make sure it is in a therapeutic range
    • Seek immediate attention if you experience unusual weakness, excessive thirst, unusual movements, blackouts, seizures, confusion, shortness of breath, hallucinations, and loss of coordination.
  28. Geodon
    helps with mood disorders to restore natural substance in the brain so you think more clearly and positively about yourself/life and help you feel less anxious
  29. Geodon- look out for
    • if you have dementia you are more at risk for stroke, heart failure, pneumonia, and irregular heartbeat
    • Take this med at the same time everyday even if you are feeling better
    • do not stop taking unless your dr tells you to
  30. Lexapro
    antidepressent to help with mood changes when you are feeling depressed or experiencing anxiety
  31. Lexapro- look out for
    • If you have any feelings of harming yourself or others, see or hear things others do not, and experience worsening anxiety, reach out to your doctor immediately.
    • You need to make sure you are keeping track of symptoms and if it gets worse, do not keep it to yourself.
    • Do not stop taking this medication without assistance from your doctor.
  32. Lipitor
    • lowers cholesterol and prevents any further damage to vessel
    • Proper dietary management, weight control and exercise should also be important when taking this med as well as controlling high fat levels
  33. Lipitor- look out for
    labs may show increased liver and kidney function levels
  34. Lanoxin (Digoxin)
    strengthen the force of the heart muscles contractions for better more affective pump
  35. Lanoxin/digoxin- look out for
    • take apical pulse before taking med and hold if you are under 60
    • dig toxicity= lethargy, confusion, N/V and blurred vision with halos
    • Will need to have labs drawn to check levels should be 0.5-2, as well as K and Mg levels because they could exacerbate toxicity
  36. Lisinopril
    ACE it relaxes the blood vessels, lowers BP and increases the supply of blood and o2 to the heart
  37. Lisinopril- look out for
    • can cause dry hacking cough
    • blood tests to monitor K and creatinine
  38. Aspirin
    lowers the ability of your blood to clump together into clots, could help prevent heart attack
  39. Aspirin- Labs
    • May increase LFT values and BUN, creatinine, sodium, and potassium levels.
    • May decrease platelet and WBC counts.
    • May falsely decrease protein-bound iodine level.
    • May interfere with urine glucose analysis
  40. Coreg
    reduces peripheral resistance to reduce BP
  41. Coreg- look out for
    can cause high K= stroke, heart rhythm changes, bradycardia
  42. Tamoxifen
    treats breast cancer and can stop the growth of tumors that need estrogen to grow
  43. Tamoxifen- look out for
    • stroke
    • heart attack
    • blood clots in lungs
    • increased pain
    • hair thinning
    • depression
    • other types of cancer
    • cataracts
  44. Ciprofloxacin
    antibiotic that contains and prevents infection risk after surgery
  45. Oxycodone Immediate Release
    relieves moderate to severe pain you may experience after surgery
  46. Oxycodone- look out for
    dry mouth, mood changes, headaches, extreme drowsiness, low rate of breathing
  47. Celexa (citalopram)
    antidepressant that helps keep feel good hormones in brain, to help with recovery and feelings of grief or depression
  48. Celexa (citalopram)- look out for
    • desire to hurt yourself or others
    • weight changes
    • insomnia
    • do not stop abruptly, track effectiveness and schedule usually takes 2-6 weeks to work follow up with Dr. after 6 weeks
  49. Chantix (Varenicline)'
    blocks the pleasant effects of smoking on the brain to help you quit smoking
  50. Chantix (Varenicline)- look out for
    • suicidal thoughts
    • reduces tolerance to alcohol
    • may decrease sexual desire and function
  51. Clozaril (clozapine)
    antipsychotic used with severely ill patients and unresponsive to medications
  52. Clozaril (clozapine)- look out for
    • need regular blood test to check for decreased absolute neutrophil count
    • use benzodiazepines cautiously together because of respiratory arrest
    • no drinking with med and smoking may decrease the effectiveness
  53. Seroquel
    rebalances dopamine and serotonin to improve thinking mood and behavior
  54. Seroquel- look out for
    • suicidal thoughts may increase, do not skip a dose and report any weird side effects
    • SE- dizziness, Gi issues, weight gain, restlessness and sedation
    • Follow up on liver enzymes, low WBC
  55. Haldol
    Rebalances dopamine and improves thinking, mood, behavior. It halts the over production of Dopamine.
  56. Haldol- look out for
    • dystonia, headache, constipation, heart palpitations, dry mouth
    • do not take with alcohol
    • may decrease sodium levels
