how can you tell if something is a pure substance or a mixture?
if it can be physically pulled apart or not.
how do you know if something is a solution?
if its composed of a solvent and a solute.
finish this sentence:
________ a ______ in _______ is often a prerequisite for chemical change
dissolving a substance in water is often a prerequisite for chemical change.
what is dissolution?
individual entities of solute dispersing through ought a solvent.
What is dissociation?
ionic compounds seperating into there ions.
What is ionization?
process by which an electrically neutral atom or molecule is converted to an ion. usually happens to acids.
what are examples of electrolytes? why are they electrolytes?
ionic compunds
: dissocciate into ions which cause solution to conduct electricity.
bases
: dissociate into ions which cause solution to conduct electricity.
acids
: ionize in water to form ions.
What is the process of dissolving?
1. bonds between particles of the solute break (this process is endothermic)
2. some of the intermolecular forces in the solvent also break (endothermic)
3. attraction between particles of the solvent and solute result in new intermoleculer chemical bonds (exothermic)
when is dissolution endothermic, when is it exothermic.
its endothermic if energy is absorbed from its surroundings, its exothermic if energy is released into the surroundings.
what is a saturated solution?
a solution in which no more solute can dissolve, the solution is at maximum concentration.
what does it mean if a solution is unsaturated?
some solute can still be dissolved in it.
what does it mean if a solution is supersaturated?
there is an excess of solute dissolved per solvent. this happens when you stir or other means of agitation.
What is soluability?
the concentration of a saturated solution.
what does soluability depend on?
temperature, pressure and chemical properties of both solute and solvent such as polarity.
what are some generalizations of soluability?
solids have high solubility at high temps
gases have high solubility in low temps and high pressure.
liquids have high solubility in water at high temps
elements have low soluability
ionic compounds you have to find out
molecular compounds have higher solubility if there polar or have hydrogen bonding.
how are saturated solutions in a constant state of equilibrium?
dissolving and crystalization are taking place at the same rate.
what is concentration?
compares quanitity of solute to quanitity of solution.
what is percent concentration?
measure of
