  1. Los Preposiciones
    • --Words/word phrases that can come before a noun to indicate relationship between that noun + another word in sentence
    • --Never change form
    • --Most indicate relationship between 2 words in terms of time, location, direction, origin
    • --Prepositions used in Spanish may not have direct English translation

    • Location: Roberto está en Sevilla
    • Time: Mi vuelo es a la una
    • Ownership: la casa de José Maria
  2. Preposiciones Simples
    • Limited number of single-word prepositions in Spanish; they ALWAYS come between 2 words; they informally can go at the end in English.
    •      ("Rita es la chica con la que salgo./...the girl I go out with.")
    • --a (at, to)
    • --ante (before, facing)
    • --bajo (under)
    • --con (with)
    • --contra (against)
    • --de (of, from)
    • --desde (from, since)
    • --durante (during)
    • --en (on, in, at)
    • --entre (between)
    • --excepto, salvo (except, apart from)
    • --hacia (toward)
    • --mediante (through, by means of)
    • --para (for, to, in order to, by)
    • --por (for, because of, by)
    • --según (according to)
    • --sin (without)
    • --sobre (over, about)
    • --tras (after, behind)

    • These are sometimes counted as prepositions
    • --pro; comes before nouns
    •      (grupos pro derechos humanos/ pro-human rights groups)
    • --versus [contra, frente a]; only used in formal texts
    •      (las grandes economías versus las econimías de menor escala/ large economies vs. small-scale economies)
    • --vía; indicates how something is done; the medium/route
    •      (El viaje es de San Fran a Nueva York vía Chicago./ The trip is from SF to NY, via Chicago.)
  3. Los Preposiciones: uso de "and" o "or"
    • --In English, 2 prepositions can be joined using "and/or"
    • --Spanish, they appear separately; noun/phrase that the preposition refers to is repeated, but in the second instance can be replaced by a pronoun
    •      (Tomo el autobús para ir a la escuela y regresar de la escuela)
    •      (Plantaremos árboles delante de la casa o detrás de ella.)
  4. Compound Prepositions (Locuciones preposicionales)
    and Prepositional Phrases (Frases preposicionales)
    • Either formed by:
    • --2 simple prepositions
    •      (por entre/through)
    • --Combo of preposition(s) + adverb
    •      ([por] delante de/in front of)
    • --Combo of preposition(s) + noun
    •     (en contraste con/in contrast with)
