What is Oxidative Phosphorylation?
Formation of ATP with the involvement of oxygen.
How many ATP does aerobic respiration form?
Aerobic respiration forms 38 ATPs for each glucose molecule ‘burned’( broken down/glycolysised) conversion rate of 55%.
How many ATP are possibly available from respiration?
Possible 69 ATPs available
What is the role of NAD*?
Role of NAD+ : to pick up and transfer electrons.
How does NAD pick up and transfer electrons? (3)
NAD receives 2 electrons when it picks up 2 hydrogen atoms. NAD+2H —> NADH + H
NADH passes the 2 electrons on to an electron transport chain and NAD is reformed.
Therefore NADH is an energy source for ATP formation.
What does NAD* receive when it picks up / hydrogen atoms?
NAD* receives 2 electrons when it picks up 2 hydrogen atoms. NAD*+2H —> NADH + H*
Where does NADH pass on electrons to?
NADH passes the 2 electrons on to an electron transport chain and NAD* is reformed.
What does NAD stand for?
NAD: Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide
What is anaerobic respiration?
The breakdown of sugar to release energy in the absence of oxygen.
Where does anaerobic respiration occur?
Occurs in some bacteria and most animal cells (eg muscles cells during strenuous exercise)
What is the effect of lactic acid?
Lactic acid reduces the efficiency of the cells- acidity lowers the pH which slides down enzyme action, causes cramps and stiffness.
How can lactic acid be converted at the end of strenuous exercise?
Deeper and faster breathing at the end i oh f strenuous exercise is needed to convert the lactic acid back into glucose in the liver.
What is anaerobic respiration equation for animals?
C6H12O6 —> 2CH3CH(OH)COOH + 150kJ
What is the anaerobic respiration equation for plants, fungi or dome bacteria?
C6H12O6 —> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2 + 210 kJ
What is the end product if anaerobic respiration for animals?
Lactic acid
What is the end product of anaerobic respiration for plants, fungi or bacteria?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
