What scale is used to represent the numbers of bacteria?
Logarithmic scale
What are the 5 stages of the growth curve for bacteria?
Lag
Log
Stationery
Death (Decline)
Survival
What happens in the lag phase of the growth curve for bacteria?(3)
A brief period of adaptation by the cells to the new conditions.
Bacteria are producing the enzymes necessary to digest the nutrients.
The rate of growth begins to increase towards the end of this phase.
What are bacteria producing in the lag phase?
Bacteria are producing the enzymes necessary to digest the nutrients.
What is the growth rate like in the lag phase of a growth curve for bacteria?
The rate of growth begins to increase towards the end of this phase.
What is the growth rate like in the log phase?
There is a rapid period of growth during log phase as the enzymes necessary are produced, there’s plenty of nutrients and few waste is produced.
Why has the period of growth been rapid in the log phase?
Due to:
Bacteria have developed the necessary enzymes and there’s plenty of nutrients.
There are few waste products being produced.
What happens the rate of growth during the stationary phase?
The rate of growth levels off during this period.
Why does the growth level of during stationary phase?
Growth rate levels off because;
Nutrients are becoming used up
Amount of waste produced by bacteria themselves is increasing.
Why are more bacteria dying than being produced during the death phase?
Very few nutrients are left
Many bacteria are poisoned by waste produced by such large numbers.
What is the survival phase of a growth curve fur bacteria?
(Endospore Formation)
In unfavourable conditions many bacteria can form endospores (they’re highly resistant to drought, high temp, etc.)
