-
Do bacteria reproduce asexually or sexually?
Bacteria reproduce asexually
-
What method do bacteria use to reproduce?
Binary Fission
-
What is binary fission? (4)
- The chromosome attaches to the plasma membrane and the DNA is replicated.
- The cell elongates and the two chromosomes separate.
- The cell wall grows to divide the cell in two.
- Two identical daughter cells are formed.
-
In binary fission, what is the first step?
The chromosome attaches to the plasma membrane and the DNA is replicated.
-
In binary fission, what happens after the dna is replicated?
The cell elongates and the two chromosomes separate.
-
In binary fission, what grows to divide the cell in two?
The cell wall grows to divide the cell two
-
By binary fission, what is formed?
Two identical daughter cells are formed.
-
Have bacteria a long/short lifecycle?
Bacteria have a very short lifecycle (reproduce every 20 min).
-
How fast can some bacteria reproduce?
Some can reproduce every 20 min.
-
What 3 labels do you need in the binary fission diagram?
- Cell wall
- Ring of DNA
- Cytoplasm
-
How do bacteria evolve to resist to new antibiotics?
Reproduce quickly, new mutations can spread rapidly - this is how bacteria evolve resistance to new antibiotics.
-
What is a mutation?
Change in genetic makeup of the cell.
-
Describe the formation of endospores? (5)
- Some bacteria can withstand unfavourable conditions by producing endospores.
- These are formed when the bacterial chromosome replicates.
- One of the new strands becomes enclosed in a tough walled capsule called an endospore.
- The parent cell then breaks down and the endospore remains dormant.
- When conditions are favourable again the spores absorb water, break their walls and reproduce by binary fission.
-
When do some bacteria produce endospores?
In unfavourable conditions
-
What replicates when an endospore is formed?
When the bacterial chromosome replicates.
-
What does one of the new strands become enclosed by in the formation of an endospore?
A tough walled capsule called an endospore.
-
What breaks down as the endospore remains dormant?
The parent cell breaks down and the endospore remains dormant.
-
What happens to endospores when conditions become favourable again?
The spores absorb water, break their walls and reproduce by binary fission.
